What does tolerance mean in Stainless Steel Sheet?
The dimension tolerance in stainless steel sheet refers to the range within which the dimensions of a specific design should stay. Just like, before customizing the size of the sheet, manufacturers have to keep a record of the SS Plate Standard Size Chart- they cannot go beyond the standard sizes for all cases, no matter the purpose. In other words, it is basically the range of allowable dimensions.
Is tolerance for SS Sheet thickness?
Yes, metal tolerance is for SS Sheet thickness. In other words, the thickness and tolerance of the materials are the same. There are applications wherein tight metal tolerance is an essential requirement and manufacturers have to follow the SS Sheet Weight chart. For those products, adjustments and control on the width of the material is required before shipping it. It is important that the clients know the Stainless Steel Sheet Thickness Tolerance of the given material, which will help to understand whether the final product is suitable for various applications. It's also important to calculate the finishes when finding the tolerance- this is because finishes like powdercoat can add thickness to the material.
How is SS 304 Sheet tolerance calculated?
While purchasing the stainless steel sheet, the buyers and manufacturers usually check the SS 304 Sheet Thickness Chart to calculate the theoretical thickness. This is why users would find that the weighing price of the sheet is always less than the theoretical price. Also, the tolerances are divided into different sizes and thus they come with different prices. The large tolerance ones are much cheaper.
What are SS Plate gauges?
The SS Plate gauges basically define the material thickness. The stainless steel is usually measured in gauges, and the higher the gauge, the thinner is the sheet. Clients can check the SS Sheet Gauge Chart before purchasing anything. Also, as higher gauge indicates lower thickness, hence the 18 Gauge Stainless Steel Sheet Price is cheaper when compared to the 12 gauge Stainless Steel Sheet Price, thus clients should be careful while purchasing.

Basic Stainless Steel Sheet Finish Designation :
The following list of Stainless Steel Sheet Finish Chart designations includes a short description of how each surface may be obtained.
- Unpolished Finish No. 2D: Cold rolling to a specific thickness, then annealing and descaling, results in a dull finish. A final, gentle roll pass on dull rolls can also be used to achieve this.
- Unpolished Finish No. 2B: The annealed and descaled sheet is given a last, light coldroll pass on polished rollers, giving it a bright finish similar to 2D. This is a cold-rolled general-purpose finish that polishes easier than the No. 1 or No. 2D finishes.
- Unpolished Finish No. 1: Hot rolling to a given thickness, followed by annealing and descaling, results in a dull finish.

- Polished Finish No. 4: Following initial grinding with coarser abrasives, a general-purpose brilliant polished finish is achieved using a 100-180 mesh abrasive.
- Polished Finish No. 3: When a semi-polished surface is required for future finishing processes after fabrication, or as a final finish with a 50- or 80-grit polish, this is the intermediate polished finish to utilise.
abrasive compound. - Buffed Finish No. 6:The reflectance of this soft satin finish is lower than that of the No.4 finish. It's made from a greaseless compound with a #200 grit topcoat and either white or chromium green rouge.
- Buffed Finish No. 8: This is the most typical reflecting finish. Flexible polishing with gradually finer abrasive compounds is followed by substantial buffing with a very fine chromium green rouge bar compound.
-
Buffed Finish No. 7: Buffing a surface that has been polished to resemble a No. 6 finish, then softly buffing with a white rouge without
eliminating satin finish lines, produces a highly reflecting finish.
common stainless steel finish types:
- No.8 – Mirror finish
- No. 4 – Brushed finish
- No. 2B – Matte finish
No. 2B – Matte finish:

Finish 2B – Matte Finish (Tag: Finish 2b / Brushed Finish / Mirror Finish /Hairline Finish / #4 Finish / 304 Stainless Steel Sheet #4 Finish | 304 SS Sheet #4 Brushed Finish | Glasgow | Hairline Finish |Embossed 4b Finish | | #8 Mirror Finish | No 4 Finish | 2b Finish )
No. 2B is the mill finish, which means it hasn't been further treated. Matte coatings have a dreary appearance and are not recommended for aesthetic applications. They are, however, an excellent choice when aesthetics isn't a priority or when more finishing is required. Number 2B The stainless steel finishing options with matte finishes are the least priced.
Stainless steel is 'cold rolled' via specific rolls or dies to achieve the finish. Cold rolling results in a smoother, pit-free surface. After that, it's de-scaled and softened in an acid solution. To improve the smoothness of the steel, it is given a last pass on polished rolls.
Common applications:
- Pharmaceutical equipment
- Chemical plant equipment
- Refrigeration
- Laundry and dry cleaning
- Paper mill equipment
- Sewage equipment
No. 4 – Brushed finish:

(Tag: Vibration Finish Stainless Steel Sheet| Mirror Finish Stainless Steel Sheet Uk | Surface Finish Of Stainless Steel Sheet | Matte Finish Stainless Steel Sheet ) No. 4 Brushed Finish
The No. 4 Brushed finish varies between vendors and even within a single supplier's batch. Different manufacturing conditions, such as wear of the abrasive belts employed in various finishes, account for the variances. When ordering the No. 4 Brushed finish, you should expect some variation. To guarantee the finish achieves the intended impact, request a sample of a few square inches.
Brushing the stainless steel gives it a unique appearance, with a subdued shine and a pattern of small parallel lines. It has a strong decorative appeal without being overly reflecting, which can be unappealing. In strong sunlight, for example, highly brilliant stainless steel accents on a skyscraper could be blinding. Because the grooves of the finish are prone to rust, this finish has some disadvantages, such as poor corrosion resistance.
The finish is achieved by sanding the stainless steel in one direction with a 120-180 grit belt, then softening with a medium non-woven belt of 80-120 grit.
Common applications include:
- Air conditioners
- Automotive design
- Home appliances
- Jewelry and watches
- Architecture
- Water heaters
No.8 – Mirror finish:
( Tag - How To Finish Stainless Steel Sheet | Stainless Steel Sheet Mill Finish | Stainless Steel Sheet Metal Surface Finish | Stainless Steel Sheet Metal Finish )

Mirror finishes are made by polishing stainless steel and are highly reflective. The polishing procedure improves the appearance and consistency of the surface, as well as making cleaning easier. It also hides surface defects and hides the after-effects of welding.
8th place The surface is mechanically treated with increasingly finer abrasives to achieve a mirror polish. A particular rolling method, on the other hand, can be utilised to replicate the look of mechanical abrasion. Deep scratches must be removed at this step because any surface flaws will be visible on the finished product. Buffing the surface for 5-10 minutes to generate a mirror-like, highly reflective gloss is the final step.
Corrosion resistance is one of the advantages of No. 8 Mirror finishing. The polishing process eliminates cracks where corrosive particles can collect.
Common applications include:
- Clean rooms
- Reflectors
- Ornamental trim
- Mirrors
- Wall panels
- Column covers
